Assistive Technology is defined as any item, device, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off-the-shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities (Technology-Related Assistance Act for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988, U.S.A.).
An Assistive Technology device may be a "high-tech" device such as a computer or an augmentative communication device, or it may be "low-tech," such as eyeglasses, a tape recorder, or a cushion for better positioning. It can also include training for parents, teachers, and related service staff.
